Could be flaking off of the zinc. I've seen that before.

Mike, I don't think it has any MD. It more likely is, like Coop said, zinc, flaking off. After all you have a steel slug, that hadd some cosmetics, and it has been around, in the meantime. Remember the '43 cent? It has the same problem.
