Got this in yesterday paid $1.00 for it and it has what I think is a re-punched date. Not really up on these Surprised Smile ,but easy to see.Extra inside verticle bar on the 4 and the 1 looks different. Is this a rpd? Question I hope my lousy pics show it.Thank you for your thoughts.Ken

Yes I see that the vert bars look wide but I don't think it's from being a RPD.

Looks to me that the bust is not pointed so it's the no L.

Yeah...from what I see this is a normal 1864 No L. Typically, IHC rpds will show distinct separation between the top and underlying digits. Often, all the but deepest digit impressions are polished away. Here are a few RPDS for this year:

Kurt, :I thought you slipped in an overlay, with the offset, for illustration. 1864/1864n, 18/18s, is what it shaows. After looking at it again, it is the S-5a, 1864 L. Note the pointed bust, and the RPD marks, North, and South, of the main digits.
The repo of the S-3, is one of those I questioned, because the"8" is not mentioned, even tho the digit is marked. It is a bit confusing. That is why I have asked about the overlay technique to verify some of the very close ones, on F-I-C. It does not seem to be very widely used. Could be a lack of familiarity with the process. I would do it more frequently, but I don't trust my eyes enough to make a definite statement.

Dick,
No overlays done--I just pulled these from Rick Snow's site and book--just a selection of pics I had. Very Happy The only time I do overlays is for obscure, undocumented coins, such as my Scandinavia overdates. I still need to get to the Iceland 1939 Eyrir Laughing

kurt, I see what went on. I saw the last image, and thought it looked awful familiar, so I checked the guide, and sure enough, it seems to be the S-5a. It is one that stood out, because og the N, & S, indications.
BTW, do you have a "hand scanner, to use on the photos in the, or any other place? I have a flatbed scanner, but it is not convenient to use, for me, so I don't use it. I did have at one time a couple hand scanners, but didn't know enough about them, and their use, and they along with a ton of misc stuff, to a computer recyclying shop. It was part of the "deal" with my wife when she bought me the 2005 eMachines system. Mad Away went all my spare parts, (about 35 units).

I might be the blind one, but I see absolutely nothing on the first coin posted in this thread. Sorry.

Correct! It is a normal type 1, bronze, no "l". Because there are three in the folder, I like to refer to them as CN, T1, T2.

Ken--glad I could provide a positive ID with that image. Very Happy The 1864 S3 is one of the lower-relief RPDs of the series. It's easily covered by dirt or missed in photos. I bought one recently that was unnoticed by the dealer.
