Looking at "Collector's Clearinghouse" in the July 19 Coin World, I saw a fascinating article on a phenomenon called "floating die clash". I've never heard such a thing. Basically a piece of the die breaks off, causing a cud. The broken off part of the die then gets hit by the "good" part of a die. The image on the broken off die bit gets impressed into the "good" part of the die just like a "normal" clashed die. The next few coins struck by that die show the clash. I suspect these are relatively scarce because "floating die clashes" require large-ish cuds. Large-ish cuds are relatively easily detected by mint employees and replaced.
This was a well-written, well-documented article. I learned a lot and highly recommend it to anyone hoping to expand their coin collecting knowledge base.
