Saw in the August 2 edition of Coin World that a PCGS 1971 DDO in MS-66 went for $10,350 at the Summer FUN show in Orlando earlier this month. And a PCGS MS-64 red version went for $862.50 in April. Wow!
The article says "The price makes one wonder if this variety is destined for broader recognition." One thing I would point out to the author is the fact that these coins were attributed by variety in the first place. People like Chuck (the owner of this site) have been doing attributions by variety for a long time and are able to determine which variety a given coin is. All this points to the fact that varieties are worth learning about/ collecting etc. But most of us on this chat board already know that, so we're ahead of most people.
What do you folks think... could this 1971 DDO soon be listed in the Red Book? Are there varieties that you think should be listed in the Red Book but aren't...yet?

Coppercoins has two die states of this doubled die listed with pictures of both die states.
Oddly enough, the obverse die went into a late die stage, so that means that there are many of these little rascals around.

I remember passing on one of those back in 2002 because it was overpriced at $25 for an AU coin. At that time a red BU coin went for $50.
Two years later (2004) at the Pittsburgh ANA it became apparent to me that people were really digging the variety designated registry sets with PCGS, and all Cherrypickers' coins were gaining a lot of steam in value, including this variety. BU examples were selling for $200-$400.
With this most recent news, I see no reason why this one should NOT be listed in the major guides, but I think it still pales in comparison to the 1970S DDO, which has gone for multiples of thousands of dollars for years now and is still not listed in those same guides.

It's a neat variety but there are other similarly neat varieties including 2 other nice 1971 varieties that sell for much less. I think part of the price increase seen on this one is because it got included in the registry sets and a low population.

Oh definitely...that's the ONLY reason it jumped so much. If PCGS didn't recognize it, that die would still be under a hundred bucks.
Name of the game is figuring out what they will recognize NEXT and load up on them.

This has always been one of my favorite dies, and I have been lucky enough to find two of them. Even though they were originally found in the Northeast, both of my finds have been here in Florida, one in South Florida, and the other up here in the Panhandle. As nice as it is, I don't know if I would agree with the prices they have brought recently.
