It looks like one maybe 2 pieces of curved metal had made an impression in the die before striking this coin. Additionally, the "9" is filled in, and a portion of the die at the point of the "1" was worn down. Maybe some of the die metal missing from the "9" is what caused the curved metal impressions in the die.
The curves are at the lower part of the "9" and in the middle of the "D" mint mark.
Could be similar to the curved damage of the 2004D Roosevelt dime?

The die is just showing heavy die wear and die chipping on the 9 in the date. Pretty common for the 1950's Cents as they squeezed every Cent they could from these dies.
When part of the die chips or falls off, then the device where it would have been is left unformed or deformed from where the piece chipped off.
The other items looks like foreign substances. Not part of the coin.

Coop, you got a neat new avatar!
Sort of seems like the government was more thrifty back in the 50s and used the dies as long as they could.

They look like two curved die dents to me. Those with more active imaginations would declare them wildly rotated, partial mintmarks. Others might equate them with the "extra leaf" die dents. But I tend to be conservative in my conclusions.

Hey, Coop, I always like your humourous sign offs, and yeah the avatar is a good one. I was pretty sure this coin would be designated LDS wear and tear, but I did have a inclination like Mike to compare the marks to those of the Wisconsin quarter or the 2004D dime.
Thanks for the comments, I'm holding it separate to see if anyone else has an idea. (at the same time, continuing my search)

On this one I cannot be completely certain that the curve inside the mintmark is not an RPM. If the very similar die crack was not on the 9, I would list it in a heartbeat...but with that crack that looks so much like part of a mintmark, it would take closer examination.
This begs a question....I wonder just how many die varieties are listed out there that actually are NOT??
I can list one for instance that has a high possibility of being simple die damage....

This coin appears to have a minor split in the lower serif... Of course my vision acts up between the lens lines... LOL!!!

I see what you mean by the minor split lower serif - it would be too minor to list even if it were - and I'm not sure it is OR isn't.

Well ok, Im gonna check on both the cents that Chuck commented on, see if it's a good idea to have them attributed or not. If this 57D is an unlisted RPM, might be a good idea.
Thanks for looking, glad I haven't bothered taking the images off Photobucket.
