Hi Murph,
You were right in that this coin exhibits machine doubling. However, this type of common doubling is not considered a variety. Varieties are made in the hubbing process, not the striking process. (doubled dies and repunhed mintmarks)
1983 has many, many cases of common machine doubling on them...especially the reverse.
I hope you do find 'the big one'. I have been after one for 21 years so far

Oh. Thanks Bob for that info. And if you've been looking for 21 years for the big one, I hope you find it before I do.

From the looks of it (1969S DDO ... 'murphy') you have found one of the best of the best there ... how I wish I ... you know the deal.
Keep looking though ... never know what will turn up.
Good Luck to you.

Ok, if that's true then the first thing I should do is take better pictures of it. I can post them here for a more accurate assessment of the coin. I've ordered a cheap microscope - should arrive within the week - hope it works for my camera. If so, then I'll have the pictures. If not, maybe I can mail the coin to someone who can make better pics.
