Politicians are a cagey group, they want to make you believe that hey are working for you when in fact they are working for themselves only, while it appears that they are catering to your desires.

Did you ever stop and wonder why politicians take these jobs? Their pay, while high, is not the only reason. Do one term as a president or congressperson and you have free medical and a pension for life, even if you are convicted of a crime during or after that term served.

Collect and gather lobbyist; the more that you have and appease, the more money in your pockets. And then, after you have served, go on tour giving speeches on how you saved the world from all the bad things; there is always a couple of million a year in that.

Throw money and entitlements at the undeserving, the illegals aliens, the dopers, the multiple child unwed mothers, the people who are to lazy to work, to ensure that you garner their votes to keep you in your position as an elected official.

Finally, go to bed at night happily knowing that you are secure (except for an occasional assassination attempt) in your life and you did it by manipulating the masses into believing that you are their savior and guiding force.

The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting all the entitlements. It is the middle class that is being hurt.

I believe many politicians enter the field with a sincere wish to improve the lives of their fellow citizens. But the large majority are subsequently corrupted by the need to raise massive amounts of money for future campaigns. I don't know if public financing of campaigns could help solve the problem on its own, but it might be part of a more comprehensive solution. The problem is that there are no limits to how much people and organizations can donate to candidates and their proxies. The Supreme Court has made sure of that.

We could, like England, impose a limit on how long a campaign could last, but that would probably be ruled unconstitutional.

I agree with both of you.
The placing of a limit, would be reminiscent of the way the UK operated, before the Colonists came to the "New world", and eventually had to fight a war to convince them that it "ain't gonna happen"!

Congressional Reform Act of 2011
1. No Tenure / No Pension.
A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when
they are out of office.
2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security
system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system,
and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for
any other purpose.
3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans
do.
4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay
will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.
5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the
same health care system as the American people.
6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American
people.
7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective
1/1/12.
The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen
made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor,
not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours
should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

I'd also add a rule saying that their pay is zero any time they do not keep spending within the budget. A ZBB budget and their pay is the lowest item. You'd be surprised how fast they would come up with a balanced budget.

If they were a private business and they spent more than they took in they would not be paid either so let them live with the same reality that others live by.
