Looks like machine doubling to me. But I checked out you images. The 1936 & 1941 DDO's are great! The 1941 has such a nice spread. Good find..

I'm not sure I see anything at all doubled in the photos. Could you try changing your lighting direction to make them come out better? Light the field of the coin, not the sides of the letters.
