Does anyone think there are new "monster varieties" yet to be found out there? I am talking about a 55P doubled die. Or maybe a 69S or 72P Lincoln? I know there are many new varieties to be found, I have a few discovery coins (as per Chuck), but I am talking about biggies. Know what I mean? Are there any yet to be discovered great finds? Not error coins, but legitimate varieties. I'm also not talking about yet to be minted varieties, but existing varieties. Opinions....

Well. it would be foolish to say absolutely not to your question but I feel the likelyhood is very slim at best. Big, naked eye, jump up and down screamers such as those would have probably been discovered by now. Dreams such as that is one of the factors making the search of even pocket change fun.

A 1988P monster DDO was discovered about two years ago. Although very rare indeed, monster discoveries are made once in a while. I would have to say chances are slim but there that there are still monsters to be discovered.

Since I have searched the obverse of at least 100,000 wheat cents but skipped the reverse on 75% of them I would bet the monsters are on the reverse !

Rollmeupabe...As I mentioned in another post, I have found over the years that many Lincoln cent collectors have done what you did, and that was primarily search only the obverse. There are some great doubled die reverses out there, especially some extreme class 6 reverses. Great years for them are 1936-1942. I have about 700 class 6 reverse Lincolns. Now...as far as finding 'monsters' there is always a chance. In the past year or so, I have made numerous new discoveries on old wheaties including class 4 doubled reverses on 1942 cents, and a strong tripled eyelid with exceptional die clashing on a 1928 P cent. Imagine a 1928 coin having a doubled die discovered (or first reported) in 2003! That's 75 years since the thing was minted!
There are many out there waiting to be discovered, but most of the time...the ones that aren't 'monsters' are twice as satisfying when found.

I've actually found that the spread in years for class 6 and class 2+6 DDRs is more like 1934-1945. Class 6 DDOs are prolific in 1944 and 1945. All of these are rather easy to spot and seem to still be out there in numbers. I don't know yet whether this means they are common or there are just a bunch of different dies. Time and attribution will tell on the answer to that.

Is the tell tale sign of class 6 doubling on the reverse the egg shaped dots in E PLURIBUS UNUM ? I just started to pay attention to the reverses and think I have found some in 1936 and 1943S pennies.

Rollmeupabe - yes...as well as the extra thickness usually exhibited by these coins in all of EPU and often in the wheat stalks. All of the extra thickness will spread toward the rim making the letters and wheat stalks look a little odd.
