Die clash, the polishing might be from when they polished it to fix it after a clash.

When they're striking coins but the machine goofs and the dies hit eachother without a blank planchet to strike. The dies bump eachother and it makes an image of the rev die on the obv and the obv die on the reverse. Later they might try to polish the damage away. They probably miss the area in the portrat so we see it there.
The mark is a bay from the reverse below the ear on the obv.
It only hits the high parts of the die but the modern cent is sort of an illusion, that area looks like it's high on the coin but it's not high so it gets clash damage there. If the die gets misaligned and clashes again it makes a serries of shifted clashes.
Check out similar modern cent clashes:

Mike, look at Coops very recent post of the wheat overlay, in the case of a wheat, or an earlier one with the memorial rev..They show what is where, and what caused it. I was going to post one, but this computer has a software that is sdifferent from that which I use, and I can't recover it. Don't buy a DELL! Or any other "Brand" name. Go Generic! It is cheaper, and does not require you buy "Brand-name" parts to make repairs, or updates.
Back to the topic, ask Coop if he can post a memorial overlay of a clash. It is worth your time!

So this one would be the planter and the wall going down( with the steps) and if I figure right it would be the left side that caused this clash?
Also
eagames where do you find the program to make the overlays
I have Gimp on my 'puter will that help?
Mike

Gimp will do the job. It works a lot like Photoshop.
Additionally, when you consider die clashes you have to think of reverses. The design in a clash will be reverse in relief and will be backwards. The hump beneath Lincoln's ear is one of the memorial bays.
Another thing - it's very rare for die clashes to be much off center, so if the clashed design is in the center of the obverse, then you can just about bet it's the center of the reverse that caused it - not the left side, right side, or some other area.

Thanks all
one of these days I'll get all the ups & downs, left & rights, normal & reverses straightened out.

Mike, you have to remember that the info you seek will be "up-side-down, and backwards", on our coinage, due to the orientation of the OBV/REV.. I try to "save the photos of the overlays", as aften as necessary, because of the changing design over the years. There are several posts, in different threads about clashes. there are many types that have presented themselves, and all are very interesting to see,as well as to determine what did what, and where.

Mike, there you go. Chuck enlightened me on another point, that I actually had never considered, the Relief. Yes, as he mentioned, it will also be reversed. I learned something new, today. This day is NOT a total loss!
Thank you, Chuck!
