- Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruholla Khomeini charges that Salman Rushdie's novel, The Satanic Verses, is blasphemous and issues an edict (fatwa) calling on Muslims to kill Rushdie.
- On March 26th, the first free elections take place in the Soviet Union. Boris Yeltsin is elected.
- In April, thousands of Chinese students strike in Beijing for more democratic reforms.
