The third of many design changes through the early years of the Lincoln cent involves this design type which appears to only be a strengthening of the details in the hair by engraving extra lines into a number of the hair curls. The earlier types had been a bit more bland, "statue-like," and apparently caused the urge to strengthen the detail in the area.
