1925 Lincoln cent year notes
Although quality is still somewhat lacking in cents this year, it is noticeably improved over that of the early twenties. Far better detail can be expected out of Philadelphia minted cents, and at least somewhat better quality control shows on Denver Mint cents. San Francisco minted cents, however, still suffer from the same fatigue and mixed quality that has plagued them for the past three years.
Uncirculated specimens from Philadelphia are quite common, but the branch mint cents tend to be quite elusive in full-red mint state. San Francisco minted cents are quite rare, fetching prices in the thousands for GEM specimens.
What the Mint gained in their overall die quality they lost in die inspection. This year boasts a real nice lineup for die variety hunters. Nearly half a dozen strong repunched mintmarks start the lineup, and the heavy hitter is a super strong and quite scarce doubled die obverse.
On the facing page are photographs of two of the stronger repunched mintmarks for the date. While the Denver Mint seemingly did not create any repunched mintmarks this year, the San Francisco Mint has a number of impressive examples. This could be because mintmarks were punched into the dies in groups before shipment to the branch mints, meaning there is at least some likelihood that all the S mint RPMs for the date could have been created in one sitting.

Be careful when attributing RPMs on 1925-S cents. Two of them are very close in appearance and spread, although the giveaway that they are from different dies is in the relationship of the position of the mintmark compared to the date. This is an important factor in attributing all mintmark varieties. While the general appearance of the RPM could change with die wear, the position of the mintmark never changes. Remembering this can assist you as the first method of comparison when trying to prove or disprove that two coins were minted with the same die.
Only two doubled dies are known for 1925, and both are S mint obverses. One is a strong class 6 distended hub doubled die thus it does not show separation lines. The other is a bit weaker, yet still shows the same class of doubling.
