1958 in history
- 1958 was the final year of the Lincoln wheat ear reverse, ending a design run that began in 1909.
- Collectors saved rolls of 1958 cents knowing the Memorial reverse would appear the next year.
- NASA was established in July to lead American civilian space exploration.
- Alaska became the 49th state on January 3.
- Hawaii became the 50th state on August 21.
- The Boeing 707 jet airliner entered commercial service, shrinking travel times.
- Fidel Castro's forces advanced in Cuba against the Batista government.
- The microchip was invented independently by Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce, enabling modern electronics.
