This is an odd mint mark type, believed by many to be positioned up-side down as the norm, with only a couple of 1946 dies known to have the mark punched opposite the norm for a true inverted mint mark. These are more scarce than other mint mark types of their years of use, with scarcity most notable in 1946. The rounded upper serif of this mint mark type is often detached from the remainder of the letter due to either a soft punching or die wear, both equally the cause.
