Mint mark types · San Francisco (S)

S-MMT01 (Early-S)

[1909-1916]

Also called the curly cue S because of the shape of the upper serif.

The first mint mark type used in the Lincoln cent series, the 1909-S cents are the first known coins to have had this stylish mint mark type. You will often see collectors mention this as the curly cue mint mark type as a reminder that the odd little curl in the upper serif is an authentication mark for early S-mint cents to include the famous 1909-S VDB cent.
