Frequently asked questions
What is a doubled die?
A doubled die is a die variety created during the die-making process (hub doubling). The doubling is part of the die and can appear on many coins struck from it.
Is machine doubling the same as a doubled die?
No. Machine doubling (mechanical doubling) is not hub doubling and is generally not collectible as a doubled die variety Machine doubling is actually the result of malfunction in the striking process.
Do all doubled dies have a Class 1–9 assignment?
Not always. CopperCoins stores class text when recorded. Some dies have clear class labels; others need further study. Classification is assigned to the appearance of the result, not the method with which the die was made.
How do I attribute my coin?
Match year, mint, and diagnostic markers to a cataloged die page. Strong apparent doubling alone is not enough — compare markers and design details carefully. If the variety on your coin is listed, there will be something in a photo somewhere in the listings that matches exactly what you have. It may be very small and not mentioned, but it will be there.
