Class 3 - Design Hub Doubling

Class 3 (design hub doubling). This die was hubbed from two different design hubs. CopperCoins lists it under the design variety shown above — the design variety named first when collectors describe the coin (for example, “small over large” → Small Date). See the nine classes article for how Class 3 differs from a normal doubled die.

Die Notes

A 1949 “Blunt 4” date is hubbed over a 1948 “Pointed 4” date. Doubling shows on the 194. This die is very similar to 1949S-1DO-001 except for two main points. The doubling of the 19 of the date are less prevalent and the mintmark is in a slightly different position. On this die the mintmark sits slightly lower and to the east of 1949S-1DO-001.

Obverse: NW-SE die scratches run through LIBERTY. N-S die scratches show to the southeast of IN. Very heavy die scratches run N-S in the throat, and these match other die scratches that show in front of and above the date. Date and mintmark are shown for mintmark placement.

Reverse: Light N-S die scratches show in the N of ONE. Other various N-S die scratches show throughout the reverse. One heavier die scratch that probably follows the die into LDS run N-S on the lower inside of the right wheat lines. Reverse is LMDS.
