Repunched Mint Marks

Mint-mark die varieties from the hand-punch era

Historical era notes and featured picks may still need specialist review. Counts are live from the catalog.

Repunched mint marks (RPMs) formed when a mint mark punch was impressed into a working die more than once in different positions or orientations. Collectors study the primary mint mark and any secondary images, plus die stages and markers.

Mint mark styles (punch profiles) are a different concept — they describe which punch was used, not whether it was repunched.

Catalog counts

Die Search for MM also includes OM results by default.

Terminology

RPMs differ from machine doubling, die chips, plating disturbance, damage, and photographic artifacts. Over mint marks (OMMs) are related but cataloged separately.

  • Primary mint mark — the strongest / intended mint-mark impression on the die.
  • Secondary image — additional mint-mark outline from another punch impression.
  • Directional descriptions — catalog class text may note north/south/east/west, tilt, etc.
  • Over mint mark (OMM) — related die type OM when one mint letter is punched over another.
  • Mint mark style — which punch profile was used (separate from whether it was repunched).
  • Die stages and markers — later wear and cracks help confirm a specific die.

Identification guide

RPMs are not the same as:

  • Machine doubling
  • Die chips near the mint mark
  • Post-mint damage or tool marks
  • Plating disturbance on zinc cents
  • Split serifs from other processes
  • Lighting and photographic reflections

Punch style matters for attribution and for understanding which mint-mark profile a die used. Styles are not RPMs.

Frequently asked questions

What is a repunched mint mark?

An RPM is a die variety where the mint mark punch was impressed more than once in different positions or orientations on the die, leaving a primary mint mark and one or more secondary images.

Do modern cents have traditional RPMs?

Traditional RPMs relate to the historical hand-punching of mint marks into working dies. Do not assume modern machine-applied mint marks create the same class of variety. See year pages and mint-mark style notes for era context.

Is an RPM the same as a mint mark style?

No. Mint mark styles describe punch profiles (for example serif S vs. Clear-S). An RPM is a die variety from multiple impressions of a mint mark on one die.

What about over mint marks (OMMs)?

Over mint marks are cataloged separately (die type OM). They are related mint-mark die varieties and appear alongside RPMs in some CopperCoins searches.
